Bokurei (睦麗)
Japanese Calligrapher / Performance Artist
Born in Kobe — a port city world-renowned for its Kobe beef — she began her career as an elementary school teacher before dedicating the past 11 years to expanding and teaching at her own calligraphy school. Through calligraphy education for students ranging from young children to adults, she focuses not only on technique but on cultivating mindfulness, discipline, and the deeper spiritual values found along “the Way” of Japanese calligraphy.
Her artistic work spans a wide range of expressions, including live calligraphy performances at major shopping malls and sacred shrines, coaching professional athletes, appearing on television programs, and creating logos and branding pieces for businesses. She is devoted to preserving and sharing Japanese culture through calligraphy, blending timeless tradition with contemporary artistry.
Today, she is committed to bringing Japanese calligraphy to the global stage—offering dynamic performances and original artworks to audiences around the world.
At MEAT MANIA JAPAN in DUBAI, her live performance will invite guests to experience the beauty, energy, and spiritual depth of Japanese calligraphy in an unforgettable way.
Calligraphy Performance at MEAT MANIA JAPAN in DUBAI
During the event, she will create a large-scale calligraphy artwork by writing the entire Heart Sutra (Hannya Shingyo) over several hours on a giant canvas. The performance will conclude with a powerful “grand character,” drawn in bold, expressive strokes. The chosen character will remain a surprise until the moment of the performance. The Heart Sutra, introduced to Japan in the 8th century, carries timeless teachings that continue to resonate around the world. One of its central concepts is “Ku (emptiness)”—the idea that emotions and experiences continually change, and that beauty can be found in simplicity and the space between forms. This philosophy has deeply influenced Japanese aesthetics, from calligraphy and gardens to hospitality and the appreciation of stillness. In addition to the live performance, guests will have the opportunity to receive personalized calligraphy. She will write names or meaningful words on traditional Japanese fans or miniature gold folding screens, creating a special keepsake to take home.
